What does not change
An implant is brushed like a tooth. It does not come out, needs no soaking or special product, and is not felt while eating once healing is complete.
It does not react to cold or heat, since it has no nerve. That sounds comfortable, but it is also what makes regular check-ups important: an implant gives no warning.
What does need attention
What surrounds the implant, the gum and the bone, stays alive. Inflammation can set in there, known as peri-implantitis, and it progresses painlessly at first.
Daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth are therefore the real maintenance of an implant. The spaces around the implant crown are cleaned with the same tools as the rest of the mouth.
Check-ups
Regular check-ups follow the implant over time. They confirm its stability, the state of the gums, and the fit of the crown.
That is also when early inflammation is spotted, at a stage where it is simply treated.
How long
An implant is designed to last and can stay functional for many years. Its longevity depends on oral hygiene, on regular follow-up, on not smoking and on the health of the gums.
The crown itself may need replacing over time. It is a wearing part, unlike the artificial root that carries it.
No lifespan can be guaranteed, and figures quoted without reservation are worth treating with caution. What can be checked, on the other hand, is what that lifespan depends on.
